The name "Renon/Ritten" is refered to an area of about 110km² between the two rivers "Eisack and Talver", in the heart of South Tyrol.
Historically, this was a really well-known area. Not only because it became the "emperors road", but also because during 16th century wealthy citizens of Bolzano built their summer residences right here. This was the place where they spent the 72 days long lasting
summer-retreat.
The Ritten railway opened for service on August 1907, at that time connecting the main square of Bozen, the Waltherplatz with Klobenstein, making Ritten easily accessible for tourism. The connection between this two places was kept active in spite of two world wars and consequent economic crises.
Afterwards, in 1966 this railway was no longer timely and the cog railway-track was replaced by a cableway. Then, after 40 years of service, the Ritten railway was suspended. At the present, a new cableway is under construction, and is planned to open by spring 2009.
"Collalbo/Klobenstein"
"Collalbo/Klobenstein" isn't just the most important village of the high sitet plateau of Renon/Ritten. It it also an ideal starting point for excursions and hikings.. A lot of small churches, chaples, old farms, castles and fortresses are really worth a visit.
Otherwise.. the historic center of Bolzano/Bozen, with its different shops, bars, boutiques and entertainments isn't that far away.
